Overview
Heralds are an ancient breed originating from The Hewn City. They were created by the Lightweaver to guard and preserve ancient knowledge.
Physical Attributes:
Heralds are a small, ancient species of dragon. Their hides are smooth and leathery, and are split laterally down the middle into two different patterns, one corresponding to each of their two heads. Despite their lack of armored scales, their skins are tough and hard to puncture, almost comparable to stone. A Herald can have two or three heads, depending on their genetics. Each head has a bony, bumpy snout and jaws lined with needle-sharp teeth. Males of the species bear a crest of six spikes atop their heads. They lack wings, but are excellent climbers, and use their sharp claws to scale cliffs and buildings.
Social:
Made with the purpose of guarding archives and important buildings, Heralds would rather stand still and pose as a statue all day than to move about and socialize. They tend to be lazy, vain dragons, but are duty-bound to the places they call home. When encountering a stranger, a Herald will follow from a distance, watching their every move. They don’t take kindly to intruders, but have an uncanny talent for determining whether or not another dragon has good intentions and a pure heart. Befriending a Herald insures that one’s lair is well-protected.
While the ancient Heralds almost never leave their stations, the modern generation is slightly more lenient. During the few instances where they aren’t at their perch, a Herald might attempt to mingle with other dragons. However, their personalities tend to be somewhat unpleasant. They are vain and sometimes pretentious, and make blunt comments without consideration. As their ancestors had no need to casually converse, they are in no way equipped with modern social skills.
Lairs:
Heralds don’t build their own lairs; rather, they will choose or be assigned to a perch and stay there at all times. Be it inside or outdoors, a Herald is happy anywhere they can be seen. They will strike a pose and hold it for hours, even days at a time. They are commonly chosen to guard archives, vaults, or other places of significance, and will do so proudly. A Herald keeps no hoard of its own, but the modern generation has adopted the practice of taking a smidgen of the treasures that they are in charge of protecting as payment.
Tactics:
Heralds are masters of stealth. They watch their enemies from afar, hiding in shadows and posing as mere statues. When the enemy least expects it, Heralds jump from their hiding places, blasting their foe with not one but two streams of breath ability. Not only are they capable of wielding two breath weapons at once, their claws and teeth are also wickedly sharp and capable of dealing a lot of melee damage. Typically, Heralds attack in small groups; while the rest incapacitate an intruder, one or two will go off to their employer or the nearest authority to report the occurrence.
